The frequency and scale of forest fires are increasing around the world. In 2021, a third of the forest area on the island of Euboea in Greece was completely destroyed. Six months after the fires, Aljohara Jeje visited the island. For The Devil is in the Details, she photographed the burned forests. At first glance, the images appear idyllic – only at second glance do they reveal the frighteningly obvious details of the destruction caused by the fire. The green patches are a strong contrast to the black background, grass sprouts on a burnt area, tender shoots break out of charred trees. Within half a year, new life emerged. The juxtaposition of the bright green young plants and the charred, dead trees shows the regenerative energy of life. The contrast is a reminder that while human-made climate change brings devastating effects and changes, life will find a way to regenerate even in these changed circumstances – with or without humans.
